چکیده

[1] PS converted waves observed near Ancona on the Adriatic coast of central Italy, as revealed by teleseismic receiver functions (RFs), vary with earthquake backazimuth and epicentral distance in a manner consistent with a 1-D anisotropic seismic structure. Using reflectivity calculations, we develop a profile of anisotropic seismic velocity through the Adriatic lithosphere at this locality. We infer crustal thickness of 45 km. Anisotropy within the crust appears at 15-km depth, suggesting a decollement between the subducting Adriatic lithosphere and the overriding crustal wedge. Lineation of inferred rock fabric is compatible with simple shear in ENE-WSW direction. In the upper mantle, we infer an anisotropic layer at 80–90 km depth. If caused by olivine crystals alignment, the nearly north-south lineation of the inferred rock fabric would be consistent with some nearby shear-wave splitting observations. This anisotropic layer may be related to mantle deformation induced by the rollback of Adriatic lithosphere.

Seismic velocity structure and depth-dependence of anisotropy in the Red Sea and Arabian shield from surface wave analysis

[1] We investigate the lithospheric and upper mantle shear wave velocity structure and the depth-dependence of anisotropy along the Red Sea and beneath the Arabian Peninsula using receiver function constraints and phase velocities of surface waves traversing two transects of stations from the Saudi Arabian National Digital Seismic Network. Frequency-dependent phase delays of fundamental-mode Lo...

Mapping seismic anisotropy using harmonic decomposition of receiver functions: An application to Northern Apennines, Italy

[1] Isotropic and anisotropic seismic structures across the Northern Apennines (Italy) subduction zone are imaged using a new method for the analysis of teleseismic receiver functions (RFs). More than 13,000 P‐wave coda of teleseismic records from the 2003–2007 Retreating‐Trench, Extension, and Accretion Tectonics (RETREAT) experiment are used to provide new insights into a peculiar subduction ...

Investigation of the strength and trend of seismic anisotropy beneath the Zagros collision zone

The Zagros collision zone is known as an active tectonic zone that represents the tectonic boundary between the Eurasian and Arabian plates. A popular strategy for gaining insight into the upper mantle processes is to examine the splitting of seismic shear waves and interpret them in terms of upper mantle anisotropy and deformation. Core phases SK(K)S from over 278 earthquakes (MW ≥ ...

Thickness of Crust in the West of Iran Obtained from Modeling of Ps Converted Waves

Receiver functions are usually used to detect Ps converted waves and are especially useful to picture seismic discontinuities in the crust and upper mantle. In this study, the P receiver function technique beneath the west Iran is used to map out the lateral variation of the Moho boundary. The teleseismic data (Mb ≥5.5, epicentral distance between 30˚-95˚) recorded from 2004 to 2016 at 17 perma...
